In this tutorial we will overview the steps to solving an equation. To
demonstrate you how to do that we selected a logarithm equation. There
are more than one way toward the solution, we show one now and you may
find another.
Here is the task. Solve the following equation for x.
First of all you can get the solution by one click on the Complete
Solution icon
on the right toolbar
if you don't want to practise, just to get the result.
The other possibility is that you start to solve the equation step
by step . When you get stuck anywhere not knowing which is the
appropriate next step, you can ask for hints. It is a small list of
possible steps, you can select and apply any of them clicking on the
appropriate list element. Note, that some of the suggested steps
(change in the equation) may not lead you to the solution, so you
still have to figure out which one to choose.
The filename of the worksheet you can find this problem is Solving Equation.
Our steps are the following:
There are two different based logarithms, we have to change one
of them into the other if it is possible. 9 based logarithm can be
changed into 3 based with the formula you can see on the picture below
Using the definition of the logarithm we can tell the denominator which is 2, since 3^2=9.
At this point we can arrange the equation with the mouse,
dragging the denominator 2 to the left side, both sides will be multiplied by 2.
Dragging the logarithm term from right side to left side means
that we subtract this term from both sides of the equation. On the left
side now you have two terms and just a simple addition is needed
for simplification, it also can be done by dragging, drop one of them
over the other.
Again from the definition of logarithm we have:
The left side can be simplified to x.
After calculating the right side we get the solution!
